Neil Woods' Grimsby Town youth team go four points clear at the top of the EFL North East Youth Alliance table

Another great week for the lads - the standards are as high as ever on and off the pitch!

Neil Woods’ Grimsby Town youth team went four points clear at the top of the EFL North East Youth Alliance table with a 1-0 win over Scunthorpe United at Brumby Hall.

The young Mariners are now on 36 points after 18 games – four better than second-placed Lincoln City, and six clear of third-placed Bradford City, but the Bantams have a game in hand on Town.

Town started with Patrick Boyes, Joe Starbuck, Jock Curran, Mattie Pollock, Tom Jamieson, Ollie Saunders, Conley Poynter, Kyle Richardson, Rumarn Burrell, Brandon Buckley (Brandon McPherson 65’), and Luis Adlard.

The match was played in tough weather conditions, but Town were on the front foot from the start, and played some good football.

The young Mariners went close on a number of occasions in the early stages, with Burrell, Buckley, and Adlard all having good efforts on goal.

And Town eventually broke the deadlock on 30 minutes when Burrell bundled home from Poynter’s corner to make it 1-0 to Woods’ side.

And Town’s top goalscorer Burrell went close to doubling the Mariners’ tally just minutes later, but his shot dragged wide after some good individual work.

The second half was similar to the first, with the conditions making it difficult for both sides, but Town dominating and dictating play.

Burrell forced the Scunthorpe goalkeeper into some smart saves as he looked to extend Town’s lead.

The Iron put on a bit of pressure towards the end as they searched for a point, but the Mariners’ defence held out for the clean sheet to ensure the 1-0 win.

Town travel to St. George’s Park to face Burton Albion on Friday (1pm) as the Mariners look to go into their final five league games in the driving seat.
