Grimsby Town youth team kept their EFL North East Youth Alliance title dreams alive with a 5-1 away win over Huddersfield Town.

It was an excellent morning to finish off a good week for the youth team!

Brandon McPherson and Luis Adlard both scored braces as Neil Woods’ Grimsby Town U18s moved up to second in the league, on 40 points – a point and a place below leaders Doncaster Rovers.

But third-place Mansfield Town can leapfrog the Mariners and Doncaster if they win their game in hand – the Stags would go top on 42 points.

Town started with Battersby, Blakely, Saunders, Curran, Smaller, Jamieson (Hope 85’), Poynter, Richardson, Adlard (Stead 70’), Painter, and McPherson (Davey 80’).

Town started brightly after some neat build-up play, and Poynter flashed wide within a couple of minutes.

And Town took the lead after six minutes when Adlard pulled back for Curran, who calmly slotted home from close-range.

But the Terriers responded immediately as they broke free to slot past Battersby from inside the box to make it 1-1.

But Town then got a foothold in the game and started to have some spells of possession.

And it was the Mariners who struck next when McPherson smashed in from outside the box to restore Town’s advantage.

Town went close again through a Curran header, but it was Adlard this time who broke free down the left, cut in and saw his shot hit the back of the net to give Town a 3-1 lead at half time.

Adlard was at it again two minutes after the break – the Terriers failed to deal with a long clearance which Adlard chased down and slotted home the one on one to give town a 4-1 lead.

Town were now in control and playing some good football, but it wasn’t without some last-ditch tackles from Jamieson and Smaller as well as Battersby making a fine save.

In the closing stages of the game Poynter broke free and looked certain to finish before selflessly squaring for McPherson to pass into an empty net.

A 5-1 win for the Mariners who had four U16s in the squad (three starting) and three players with the first-team at Morecambe.

Town return to action against Oldham Athletic at Cheapside on Saturday, April 27 (12pm).
