Neil Woods' Grimsby Town U18s were held to a 0-0 draw by Chesterfield in the EFL North East Youth Alliance at Cheapside.

Grimsby Town youth team failed to return to winning ways in the EFL North East Youth Alliance as they drew 0-0 with Chesterfield at Cheapside.

The young Mariners were looking to get back on track, after their 1-0 away defeat to Burton Albion, but instead made it two league games without victory.

Town started with Patrick Boyes in goal, and a back four of Joe Starbuck, Tom Jamieson, Emil Powles, and Ollie Saunders.

Brandon McPherson (Luis Adlard 60’), Jock Curran, Kyle Richardson, Brandon Buckley, and Conley Poynter (Cameron Painter 70’) made up the midfield, with Rumarn Burrell up front.

Town started the game well, and produced some good play as they looked to break the deadlock.

And they came close to doing so through Burrell, a long-ranged effort from Buckley, and a good run from McPherson before the winger dragged wide from a tight angle.

Defensive midfielder Curran had the best chance when Buckley picked him out in the box, before his shot bounced off the bar.

Chesterfield came back into the game and had some good possession without threatening Boyes in Town’s goal, as it remained goalless at the break.

The Spireites started the second half brighter and had a number of efforts in the first few minutes, keeping the Town back line penned in.

The visitors continued to control the second half, but both teams cancelled each other out with no real efforts of note on goal.

The game ended 0-0 as Town’s lead at the top of the table was cut to two points by second-placed Doncaster Rovers, who also have a game in hand on the young Mariners.

And Town host Doncaster Rovers in a top-of-the-table clash at Cheapside this Saturday (11am).
