Young Mariners Defeat Hard-Fighting Bantams

By

Bradford City U18s 0 - 3 GTFC U18s

The Young Mariners had their second game of the season, last Saturday. Their opponents were Bradford City, who were looking to carry on their good run of form following a 4 – 1 victory over Chesterfield. The Town youngsters, on the other hand, were hoping to improve upon the 1 – 1 draw against rivals, Lincoln City, that they had picked up two weeks beforehand.

Bradford dominated possession early on, but it was Town who managed to score first, with Rumarn Burrell capitalising on a Bradford mistake to send the Young Mariners 1 – 0 up in the 7th minute. Five minutes later, Rumarn Burrell piled on more misery for Bradford, after slotting home following a good run. The quick turnaround in play placed the Town youngsters firmly in the driving seat, and they came close to making it three through Poynter.

On the 21st minute, Town got their third, with central defender, Mattie Pollock, smashing the ball in the net from close range after some good build up play. The Young Mariners continued to pile on the pressure following this, and were unlucky not to have added more to their tally before the break.

HALF-TIME: Bradford City U18s 0 – 3 GTFC U18s

Bradford dominated possession once again in the second half, and managed to breach Town’s defensive line, but Ollie Battersby’s clever saving denied the Bantam’s chances. At the other end of the pitch, Rumarn Burrell unluckily missed out on his hat-trick after his effort was cleared off the line by the Bradford players. Neil Woods made some changes in personnel in an effort to keep the pressure on Bradford, with Cameron Painter and Lennon Stead coming on in the 65th minute, and the trio of Lewis Derrick, Brandon McPherson, and Ayodeji Owoeye being subbed on 15 minutes later. Town created more chances through Joe Starbuck and substitute, Brandon McPherson, but none of them hit home. The referee called time soon after, giving the Young Mariners their first win of the new season.

FULL-TIME: Bradford City U18s 0 – 3 GTFC U18s

The Young Mariners will now look to their first home game of the season, when they host County Durham based, Hartlepool United. The Town youngsters will be looking for revenge after Hartlepool dumped them out of the Youth Alliance Cup, last season, smashing the Young Mariners 5 – 1. Hartlepool have been in a good run of form recently, racking up big wins against Scunthorpe and league newcomers, Huddersfield, as well as a draw against Burton. It will be a 12 o’clock kick-off, and will take place at Cheapside Training Ground.
