Young Mariners Catch a Win Over Cod Army

The Young Mariners played in their first cup game of the season last Saturday against the previously unbeaten Fleetwood Town. The GTFC youngsters were on an unbeaten run of their own, and were looking to continue that into the next game. Defender, Mattie Pollock returned to the Starting XI, following an illness, and Brandon Buckley also joined the line-up, after missing out last week due to being named in the First Team.

The Town youngsters placed themselves in the driving seat almost immediately, with a goal in the 4th minute courtesy of Rumarn Burrell, who latched onto a misplaced back pass and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner. The Young Mariners continued to press following the goal and got their second not long after, when they were awarded a free kick. Brandon Buckley was the man to take it and fired a low shot into the bottom left corner with expert precision to send the Town Youngsters 2 – 0 up. Town got their third on the 33rd minute when Kyle Richardson chipped the ball to Brandon Buckley, who managed to release the ball into the back of the net, despite clashing with the opposition goalkeeper. Fleetwood came into the game in the last 10 minutes and started to press the Town defence. This led to Emil Powles receiving a booking near the end of the half for bringing down his man. There was a lengthy stoppage later in the half after a coming together near the halfway line, delaying the whistle as a Fleetwood player received medical treatment. The referee eventually called for the break, with the Young Mariners 3 – 0 up.

HALF TIME: GTFC U18’s 3 – 0 Fleetwood Town U18’s

The second half started out a little more competitive than the first, with Fleetwood looking to pull one back. But it was the Young Mariners that were the ones to score next, with Rumarn Burrell receiving the cross from Kyle Richardson and launching the ball at the underside of the crossbar to get Town’s fourth goal, and his second of the game. Some fresh legs were brought on a few minutes later, with Lennon Stead replacing Joe Starbuck. Conley Poynter nearly made it 5 when he went tantalizingly close after he hit the ball past the goalkeeper only to be denied by the post. More changes were made later on in the half as Cameron Painter, Reese Jahoo, and Lewis Derrick came on for Emil Powles, Jock Curran, and Rumarn Burrell. Town kept looking for their 5th goal, but the score would remain at 4 – 0 as the referee called time.

FULL TIME: GTFC U18’s 4 – 0 Fleetwood Town U18’s

The Town youngsters have now extended their unbeaten run to 9 games, scoring a total of 20 goals in that time and conceding one. They will now look on to facing Notts County at Cheapside on Saturday 29th September in the league. Notts County have had mixed form of late, winning two and losing two, but have nonetheless had no problems with scoring, netting 9 in their last four games. Town will have to be on their A game once again to get the win. The match will be an 11am kick off.
