Neil Woods’ side, who had now-first teamers Ollie Battersby, Mattie Pollock, Jock Curran, and Brandon Buckley in their ranks, won the EFL North East Youth Alliance title in 2018-19.
And the young Mariners will be hoping to keep that good momentum going, ahead of the 2019-20 season.
But they face a tough test on Saturday as they host Premier League U18 South side Norwich City in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, July 27 (1pm).
The Canaries finished bottom-place last season, after losing 17 of their 22 games, but it is a tough league indeed – with Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, and Southampton in the division.
But despite their finish in the PL U18 South last season, first-team manager Daniel Farke utilised plenty of youth academy graduates – Jamal Lewis, Max Aarons, Ben Godfrey, and Todd Cantwell – as they won the Championship in 2018-19.
And this Saturday’s friendly will provide Town with a chance to pit themselves against a youth academy which has provided plenty of first-team talent at an elite level.
