“I was pleased with the lads' application - it's always difficult to play the same team twice in a short period of time.”
Grimsby Town youth team coach Callum Lester
Grimsby Town U18s moved up to fourth-place in the EFL North East Youth Alliance with a 3-0 home win over Burton Albion U18s at Cheapside.
Neil Woods’ side beat the Brewers for the second time in four days, thanks to first-half goals from captain Brandon Buckley, Rumarn Burrell, and Kyle Richardson.
The young Mariners started with Ollie Battersby in goal, and a back four of Tom Jamieson, Mattie Pollock, Emil Powles, and Ollie Saunders.
Town’s midfield five consisted of Lennon Stead (Conley Poynter 60’), Cameron Painter (Jock Curran 60’), Richardson, Brandon McPherson (Joe Starbuck 46’), and skipper Buckley (Ayodeji Owoeye 85’) – with Burrell (Reese Jahoo 80’) as the lone striker.
The Mariners were ahead after just two minutes as McPherson swung in a great cross for Burrell to slot home from close-range.
But the visitors came close to an immediate equaliser as their striker’s header hit the post just a couple of minutes later.
But skipper Buckley doubled Town’s advantage on 12 minutes with a wonderful solo goal as he neatly tucked his strike into the bottom corner.
The Brewers had some possession after conceding, and tested Battersby from range but Town stood strong.
And the young Mariners went 3-0 up just before the break as Richardson buried a penalty, after Stead was fouled in the box by a Burton defender.
The second half was fairly even, with neither side really carving out any clear-cut chances.
But the visitors got a penalty in the closing stages of the game before Battersby got down low to make a great save and secure a clean sheet for the young Mariners.
Woods’ side welcome Huddersfield Town to Cheapside next Saturday in the EFL North East Youth Alliance (11am).
