“Good end to the week for the lads! Great to bounce back with a win after a disappointing loss in the cup last week.”
Grimsby Town youth team coach Callum Lester
Neil Woods’ Grimsby Town youth team returned to the top of the EFL North East Youth Alliance table with a 2-0 win over Bradford City at Cheapside.
Top goalscorer Rumarn Burrell bagged his 12th goal of the season in the first half before Lennon Stead doubled the young Mariners’ lead with eight minutes to go.
Town started with Ollie Battersby in goal, and a back four of Tom Jamieson, Mattie Pollock, Emil Powles, and Ollie Saunders.
The Mariners’ midfield five consisted of Brandon McPherson (Joseph Starbuck 55’), Jock Curran, Kyle Richardson, Brandon Buckley (Lennon Stead 75’), and Conley Poynter, with Rumarn Burrell (Luis Adlard 75’) as the lone striker.
The Mariners started the brighter with some good spells of possession to open the game, but didn’t really create a great deal.
Town’s first real chance came when Richardson found space to have a shot after a neat passage of play from the Mariners, but his effort went narrowly wide.
But Town eventually broke the deadlock as McPherson beat his man to put in a cross, which bobbled around between the goalkeeper, and Burrell put it in the back of the net to give Town a 1-0 lead at the break.
Bradford started the brighter in the second half and controlled possession but rarely threatened the Town goal.
And Town sealed the game in the 82nd minute when Adlard chased down a loose ball to slide it across to Stead who tucked it home from 12 yards to make it 2-0 to Town, who return to the top of the table.
The Mariners return to action with a trip to Notts County on Saturday as Neil Woods’ side look to make it nine EFL North East Youth Alliance games unbeaten (11am).
