“Elite football is a ruthless game. Our application was excellent but the cup run has come to an end. Big games coming up next week!”
Grimsby Town youth team coach Callum Lester
Grimsby Town U18s fell to a late goal as they lost 2-1 to Bury in the EFL Youth Alliance Cup semi-finals at Cheapside.
Town: Battersby, Jamieson, Saunders, Curran, Pollock, Powles, Starbuck, Richardson, Burrell, Buckley, Poynter.
The Mariners had taken the lead in the first half when the referee pointed to the spot after Rumarn Burrell’s acrobatic effort was blocked by a hand.
Kyle Richardson stepped up and made no mistake to give Town the lead going into the break.
But the visitors started the more brightly in the second half and drew level on 50 minutes. A wind-assisted clearance fell favourably for a Bury striker who slotted home from close-range.
Battersby made a good save for Town and Burrell and McPherson were within inches of restoring Town’s advantage.
But it was to be heartbreak for the young Mariners when a deflected cross landed at the feet of a Bury player who poked the ball home from close-range.
Next up for the Mariners are Bradford City at Cheapside on Saturday (11am).
