“We have another busy week ahead and we are striving to be better in all areas daily!”
Grimsby Town youth team coach Callum Lester
Neil Woods’ Grimsby Town youth team fell to their first defeat in four EFL North East Youth Alliance games as they lost 1-0 to Burton Albion U18s at St. George’s Park.
The young Mariners put in a valiant performance, and deserved more from the game, but fell to a first-half strike from the Brewers.
Town started with Patrick Boyes in goal, and a back four of Tom Jamieson (Joe Starbuck 45’), Mattie Pollock, Emil Powles, and Ollie Saunders.
Conley Poynter (Brandon McPherson 45’), Jock Curran, Kyle Richardson, Brandon Buckley, and Luis Adlard (Lennon Stead 60’) made up the Mariners’ midfield, with top goalscorer Rumarn Burrell as the lone striker.
The Mariners made a few changes to the starting line-up from previous weeks and started the game well.
Town had a few chances from distance which came to nothing in the early stages.
But it was the Brewers who broke the deadlock on 20 minutes when their winger cut in and finished well from range.
At the other end Burrell forced Burton’s goalkeeper into an excellent stop, after Town’s best move of the game.
Town were on top again in the second half, with Richardson and Burrell coming close to equalising for the Mariners.
And Buckley had a great attempt from a free-kick, but the Brewers goalkeeper pulled off a good save to tip it on the bar.
Town continued to battle and search for their way back into the game, but ultimately fell to just their third league defeat of the season.
The young Mariners are back in action on Saturday as they welcome Chesterfield to Cheapside (11am).
