Grimsby Town U18s 5-2 Rotherham United U18s match report

By Adam Smith

Grimsby Town youth team go top of the EFL North East Youth Alliance table, thanks to Rumarn Burrell's brace in 5-2 win over Rotherham United

“Well done to the U18s - improved performances! Another big week ahead.” Grimsby Town youth team coach Callum Lester

Striker Rumarn Burrell scored a brace as Grimsby Town U18s beat Rotherham United 5-2 at Cheapside to go top of the EFL North East Youth Alliance table.

Burrell’s double, along with strikes from Brandon Buckley, Kyle Richardson, and a Millers own goal, helped Neil Woods’ side climb to the top of the table – with a game in hand on second-placed Lincoln City, and a point above the Imps.

Town started with Boyes, Joe Starbuck, Jock Curran, Mattie Pollock, Tom Jamieson, Ollie Saunders, Luis Adlard, Kyle Richardson, Brandon Buckley, Conley Poynter, and Rumarn Burrell.

The Millers started brightly and controlled the early exchanges of possession with neither side creating any chances, and it was Rotherham who took the lead through a 20-yard strike in off the post.

Town responded immediately with some quick play between Starbuck and Burrell who squared for Buckley to slot home.

Town then found their stride and controlled possession and made it 2-1 ten minutes later when Buckley cut in and beat his opponent – this time returning the favour and squaring for Burrell.

It was three on the stroke of half time when Poynter set off on a solo run from his own half only to see his strike saved by the Rotherham goalkeeper and it to ricochet off a Rotherham defender and end up in the back of the net.

Town started the second half right where they left off, and scored when Richardson picked out Adlard from a free-kick to head home from close-range.

Town then added a fifth when Burrell charged down the ‘keeper and tapped the rebound in back off the post.

Rotherham added a late consolation, but the Mariners claimed all three points with a 5-2 victory.

The young Mariners face Scunthorpe United at Brumby Hall on Saturday (11am).
